Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk in the municipality of Zaanstad in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses.
I went to Zaanse Schans back in January 2014 for the first time. I was really cold that day I remember but sunny. From the memories from last visit, it was a small village and a quite place.
I decided to cycle there on Sunday, again my friend was happy to join me. I decided to go his place on Saturday evening so we can live a bit early in morning. Following are some awesome picture that I took in the evening on the way to my friend,
Next morning, we had big breakfast and we left at 12:00. The distance from his flat to the place was like 33 Kms. We start cycling and after some cycling we were on back side of Central Station.
We chose to go through a different path than we decided, we started cycling towards West. We went close to Westerpark and on the way, I grabbed some fruits and drinks from Albert Hijn and moved on. On the way, we came across small new Windmills. Here are pictures again.
We went ahead and reached the place where we supposed to take the ferry from. The ferry took us to Zaandam which is a small city close to Amsterdam.
We kept cycling and after a few kilometres, we were in Zaanse Schans, we were welcomed by the chocolate smell as there is a cocoa factory there and that spreads the smell of awesomeness all over the town. Here is a pictures I took from the main bridge,
Something was not right about the place, it was so crowded and noisy. I didn’t enjoyed it a bit. And it’s just the loud people, the place itself doesn’t have any charm except for old Windmills, that you can see in Amsterdam as well. Here are a few pics,
We cycled here and there and reached a quite place. We ate fruits there and decided to cycle back to home.
On the way back we cycled on highway with some really nice view. We ended up in a place called Twiske and there I saw very old Windmill that was made sometime in 15th century and was functional until 1984. Here is picture,
I took one wrong and we ended up in a wrong path, thanks to google maps, we were in Amsterdam North after an hour or so. More cycling, we were in Amsterdam East, we ate two Shoarma and a few Ayrans in a Turkish shop :). Another picture I took on the way back
After that, we parted our ways, I cycled towards IJburg. I was in Diemerpark and it was sunny at that time. After having a day in a place full of people, I needed my solitude. I went deep into park where no one was around and set alone and enjoyed sun and wind.I went back home after that and I was dead tired, I took shower and went to sleep. I ended up cycling 80 kilometers today.
And BTW, following are pictures and a timelapse I took when I was in Zaanse Schans last time.
